How important is it to have the hoods correct? If you ride for 5 hours a day, it becomes a very big deal.

Persons who ride long distances on bicycles with their hands in an extended position against the hand grips put pressure on the hooks of their hamates, which compresses the ulnar nerve. Because of this, this type of nerve compression is called (handlebar neuropathy). This is an injury that results in sensory loss on the medial side of the hand and weakness of the intrinsic hand muscles.

The best solution is to first know where the choice of saddle lies in space. Once we know that, along with the lower leg needs, we can determine the correct effective body extension for compression.

The world is full of mysteries and that really holds true in the cycling business. There are a ton of fit ideas and gimmicks to track attention, the folks who use these gimmicks don't have a problem taking the money! Show time!

Have you ever had a car tuned? After being tunded, the car is not stock, is should provide more power, better mpg, etc.... But you better do your homework, there is a market that is more like a racket, buyer be aware, as you can degrade the car very quickly with the purchase of (ECU chips, exhaust, headers, injectors, etc...). So purchase all these things and it can have you loosing power from the stock, and causing wear and tear.

We are getting a lot of calls and emails about our science verses the many mass market systems even the high dollar jigs, systems, old school, guess work, working from the skin, and put on some sort of sizzle production. We just picked up a number of new dealers who have gone full circle on this topic. A costly path!

They let us know how much money they dropped and now have learned that the systems they have don't really make that much of a difference, i.e. tracking the hip is a huge issue as the bones are deep!

On the same note, after attending the many schools on fitting, these folks are starting to understand what the real science is. In many cases, so called cutting edge sizzle is not addressing the needs of (compression, shearing, and tension) that cause wear and tear.

Too bad for these fitters, as we have new tech and gadgets that will myth-bust! The new mathematical model will make a difference.

WN Precision intends to send shock waves through the very misleading movement industry. The future is upon us!

At this level it only takes missing one pedal stroke. It's about who makes more precise strokes, plus some good skills, e.g. running, as was the case during the heat races. Each of the guys has had a ear full on the "how to pedal skills". I guess they each have learned a thing or two!

To be in the hunt for the worlds, you have to have a great "heat race" to get towards the front at the start!

What's cool about this is they are all different sizes and ages! No mass marketing fit here!

At this level all it takes is one mistake and you can't bring the race back. Sue Butler looses shoe on a run, plus crashes. That's all it takes. Still gets 7th. After WN'ing just a week ago, racing can be humbling.

Impressive results from a couple of full time working guys. To break the top 10 in any sport is hard.

Tim Butler gets 6th in his age 45 -49.

So today was the race I have been planning for all year in Madison, Wi. Well, the race I had planned for would be several inches of snow, so to have no snow and 32deg. With sunny skies was kind of a let down in regards to technicality. The prior days racing reached a high of 51deg. And was very muddy, so all of those mud ruts froze for my race making it very treacherous to ride. On one long section of course, the ruts we're almost unridable and I cracked my knee on my stem so hard I had to rub on it for two minutes before continuing my course preview.
I got a good warm up, layered well and waited for staging. Last years champ Peter Weber got the first call, then Branden Dwight, then myself, and the rest of names like Adam Myerson, Mark Savery, and so on. To be on the front row in a cross race is huge, so things were looking good to podium. The fun goes off and I gap the field by eight bike lengths taking the hole shot with ease. As we make the first right hand turn I started to cross cross the ruts, as that was the only way to ride that long section. Half way through it turns chaotic for everyone. I got stuck in a rut and got poped out the right side snapping a course post and tape, then getting tangled, scrambling to get back on course and seeing and hearing more posts and tape getting snapped all around me. The carnage in front and behind me was incredibly unsafe racing conditions. Side note; the next race, USA cycling moved the course over, bypassing the 500 meter unsafe section.
By the time I got rolling again I was in 12th position and moving up slowly. I consider myself as a very good technical rider, and todays conditions tested those skills. I found myself hitting the ground twice, and dabbing my foot down a dozen times catching myself from going down. I fought my way into 8th place at the finish, which should secure my front row starting position for next years race. My Specialized bikes with Ki2/Dura-Ace drivetrain, TRP brakes/levers, WN Precision, Challenge tires, and Ritchie components were flawless!
I am disappointed to not have podiumed after so much time, effort, and support I have received from so many of you.
I do have one more epic event, the Masters World Cyclocross Championships, next weekend in Louisville, KY. I hope to have better luck.

Torque?

So what's torque? Torque makes you go! Are bike fitters just making a movie, putting on a sales production? People are paying good money for these services and many mass marketing fit systems only produce one fit style?

"It is said, they will never know the difference, I already paid for that bike, I don't want to hear that it not the correct size? I need to get it off the floor"

Torque is a measure of the LOAD on a rotating part. As far as any cyclist is concerned it is the load imposed on the primary drive gear, the one attached to the crank, or better through the human/pedal interface, starting with the interacting human linked chain, footbed, shoe, pedal, pedal shaft. If you over-torque the any part of human or tool, even a bolt on the bike, you’ll likely to break something.

Poor bike fitting can place or remove torque to the motor (human)! Too much torque on any of the many parts and failure can occur i.e. ouch. Remove the much needed torque and you don't go better. Now think of some weaker part father down the drive train, after WN is able to teach you how to find the torque.

One day, we had Nat Ross a Gary Fisher pro mtb racer producing so much torque from his engine, the loads through the energy, through the gears, the drive chain, was snapping off parts on his 29 inch bike. Nat knew our WN mtb fit allowed him to get the torque through his body, to the pedal. It made a difference, even in the 24 hour races.

Super, we can use our WN CAD to make you more powerful. But when you're designing a human engine from scratch all the gear ratios are undetermined and you can't even calculate the load from the human engine torque alone because the load is equal to human engine torque times gear ratio?

The torque is further multiplied by ft lbs. Let's say that we loose 20% of our torque do to "transmission losses", we end up with ft lbs of torque at the rear wheel. This is the maximum amount of torque at the rear wheel of the bike in first gear and will only be available at one rpm, peak torque’s rpm. At all other rpms the torque will be less. Actually, if you rev the engine, you’ll have much more torque available. Because the energy stored in the rotating crank, etc. is released. Loads, where are they stored?

The heavier these parts are, the more load you put on the transmission, chain, the rear wheel spokes, and rear tire. It feels like you have more power but what you’ve done is "store a lot of energy" in rotating masses and then applied it to the bike. With you can't transmit the loads, you have losses.

Once the engine and rear tire is in sync only the engine torque will accelerate you and any extra mass of the will actually slow you down. It’s impossible to tell the difference between low end torque and heavy torque regarding the effect when you rev the engine. That is why power is very hard to study. Plot all you wish, you very hard to make sense of it.

Now, to make rear wheel torque useful for calculating acceleration we must convert it into lbs of force at the rear tire’s contact patch by dividing the rear wheel torque by the rear tire radius. If our bike weights in with rider, that's lbs of weight. From one of Newton's laws of motion: f = ma. .

Now, in the real world, not in a lab, the maximum acceleration will be much less because we've got to fight the wind. In reality, to produce numbers in a lab don't help in the real world. Actually, the maximum acceleration will occur at a speed just below maximum torque since lowering the rpms reduces the torque just a little but the reduction in speed reduces the wind resistance by a lot.

Good thing we have a new science that will allow you to increase the torque. It means you will be able to reduce losses at the pedal.

WN's Butler prevails in snowy new year 'cross'

Annis, Anthony round out Chicago podium

Sue Butler (River City Bicycles/Ridley/WN) fought snow and gusting winds to record her first victory of the 2011-12 season. Saturday's winner Sally Annis (crossresults.com p/b JRA Cycles) finished second, 51 seconds back, followed by Crystal Anthony (LadiesFirst Racing) in third place, 1:13 down.

After a very bad crash last year at worlds, Butler showed what she's made of, never throwing in the towel to get back her form. When you take a hit like she did, it takes a long time to come back.

She launched off the start line to take the hole shot and settled into a lead group. Annis was the early protagonist, with Anthony and Nicole Thiemann (CF Elite) also taking turns at the head of the race. Butler's WN smooth riding style prevailed, however, as the Portland, Oregon, rider carried more speed through the course's various sand traps and muddy portions. Butler had the mind set and rode away on her own in the latter 1/3 of the race to claim a solo victory.

"I was riding through things that people were running, and I would ride to things a little bit closer because every time I just rode a little bit more than someone else I would catch people," said Butler. "When I got around someone, I punched it."

Butler's victory was her first since 2010 and she'll head towards next weekend's cyclo-cross national championship in Madison, Wisconsin on a high note. At this level, it's what's between the ears that can make a difference. A WN'ing fit and WN'ing input can make a difference.

In 2011, we took real time measurements of saddle while a person rode their choice of saddle. We found many things that could hurt you, or get you off the bike.

This is crazy? People really have different shape sit bones and have different volumes of soft tissues! What's next, a MRI to make sure your bones are normal?

Governing body to introduce allowable incline limit to allow for individual rider comfort

The International Cycling Union (UCI) is to enforce its saddle tilt rule in 2012, BikeBiz reports. The regulation, as part of the raft of rules that govern the shape of frames, and riders’ positions, does not allow for saddles to be tilted; while the rule was generally ignored by riders, mechanics, and the UCI for many years, the governing body began to enforce it during this year’s Tour de France; mostly concentrating on time trial bikes.

UCI technical coordinator Julien Carron announced the decision in a letter to bike manufacturers yesterday; but stated that, instead of the draconian enforcement of the existing rule, the UCI would introduce an allowable incline limit.

UCI rule 1.3.014 simply states: “The saddle support shall be horizontal. The length of the saddle shall be 24 cm minimum and 30 cm maximum.”

The simple rule does not appear to allow any room for interpretation but, since it was a rarely enforced regulation, riders have ignored it and been allowed to do so for many years.

Many riders like to tip their saddle forward slightly, to aid comfort, while a few like to tilt it backwards. The late Frank Vandenbroucke used to have his saddle nose pointing upwards quite prominently, with the Belgian’s team mechanic once remarking that: “Frank likes to hurt his balls.”

To allow for riders to keep their comfortable positions – and to allow for the occasional Vandenbroucke-style masochist – the UCI is to amend the rule to allow for a tilt of up to 2.5 degrees, with a tolerance of 0.5 degrees, in either direction.

"As a result of many discussions and comments concerning Article 1.3.014 on the horizontality of the saddle, the UCI has decided to clarify the situation by introducing a tolerance to the measurement of the saddle angle,” Carron wrote. To determine the value of this tolerance, the UCI has taken into account many measurements recorded in competition, numerous scientific articles published on the subject describing biomechanical issues as well as discussions with several saddle manufacturers.

“The concept is to grant the rider sufficient freedom to allow a comfortable position to be adopted,” he added, “reducing the pressure on the perineum, while avoiding any deviation through an excessively sloping saddle that could improve sporting performance to an unacceptable degree by the addition of a lumbar support."

As with the majority of the UCI’s regulations of this kind, the saddle tilt rule will mostly affect time trial bikes, and this is likely where it will be enforced the most. Bikes are already scrutinised by technical commissaires before riders are allowed to start, and this will be just one more check for them to make.

Unless a rider turns up to the start line with an obviously sloping saddle however, bikes are unlikely to be scrutinised on anything more than a random basis in road races; the prospect of checking up to 200 bikes at once is surely enough to make even the most zealous commissaire baulk.

A forward-tilting saddle on a time trial bike allows a rider to make the lower positions more comfortable, thus allowing them to get more aerodynamic. If they are forced to bring their saddles closer to the horizontal – if, under the revised regulation, not actually to it – many will find themselves forced to bring their frontal position a little higher or risk losing power.

That's it! Our racers don't just ride like the others!

WN cares because it's our job, our fit and what we learn really makes a difference for all. Sue Butler a pro husband Tim also races. Tim just sent us a thank you with pics. He not only took the WN on Sunday, but took a 2nd on Sat. Tim had a great day, a great weekend, a great season!

If WN is fitting you correctly, teaching you correctly, the results will tell us if we have done our homework. Each year we vest money into the science and each year WN learns something that makes a difference and pass that on to our users. It gives them an edge as the sport reaches another level. We love a good race, it makes WN dig and find something that will make a difference next year or years to come. The past year, we found yet more ways that make a difference. We are still testing something that is going to help everyone. Just the facts and you will improve. Like it or not, truth will take you to the next level. You might have a mind set, but science makes a difference. The key, is to be open and willing to work for it.

There are many body types, sizes, etc... (men, women, kids) many types of people and to claim they all think the same is so "wrong'. Everyone is different (feet, legs, knees, hips, spine, arms, brain). To have a great day, weekend, season comes only after you're best practice, you have to believe in what you're doing, trust in bike fit, the support and ride light the wind.

You can have good days or bad, but the way we set up the bike really makes a difference over time. Learning the correct pedal stroke makes a difference, you just need the best solution and believe that you can!!!

Please understand, there is no sliver-bullet. Not all make the grade, that's the nature of sport. Close is not good enough. Our solution is the best fit you will ever have. There are difference styles, but you can't change the way the muscles and bones work "like it or not".

We are very pleased with the great results of the hard charging racers who use WN. They can hold their heads high with their results.

Eddie not only performs WN fits in GA., he also makes time and races. He knows first hand what can make a difference in the cycling game. A WN fitter sees everyone improve after a precise fit and a little instruction.

Eddie just took his state championships in GA, in single speed X-Cross. The fact, when you have your mind on the things that make a difference you get results.

What's more important, is a WN precise fit and pedal instruction is not just for the top dog, it helps improve the gal or guy e.g. golf swing. It is not uncommon to see a eye-poping (50 to 100 watts) out of someone. Now that makes a difference over time for anyone. Not all fits do this!

Eddie also just had one of his customers make it on the Olympic Long Team list for 2012 MTB. Her name is Kristin Park should you care to look her up. He has put forth some great performances.

It's very hard to know what truth is today!!! There are many fits that are only eyeing it. They don't have a 3D software that measures everything in your body. The truth, if we can get someone to get a WN fit, listen to what we have learned about pedal styles, they can take their game to another level. We have done this for many years now and with the best in the game. Note our world, national, state and local results and you make the decision.

What's improvement worth? You can spend a lot of money on the gear, but it's still the human who works the tool!

Butler, Duke make up the podium

Being competitive among the world's fastest women is not a walk in the park.

Sue Butler (River City Bicycles/WN) grabs holeshot for the second day. The Second lap Nicole Duke (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com) and the previous day's winner Meredith Miller (Cal Giant/Specialized) gained some ground on the others.

Then with two to go Miller attacked and Butler went with her. The two were together then with one to go Miller gained ground on Butler. Butler gave Miller a good fight and stayed ahead of Duke for second and Krazniak rolled in a few seconds behind Duke for fourth.

The women chasing behind were working hard all day. In the end it was Devon Gorry (Team Rambuski Law) who rode off the group to roll in for fifth and the final podium position.

2011 Cyclingnews Female MTB Polls puts Amanda Carey #5 in World.

2011 Cyclingnews Female Mountain Biker of the Year award is done.

Amanda Carey voted #5 and becomes top US MTB gal.

The funny thing about being at the top of your sport, it's also fan based. It's very important to be liked. Not all are!

What makes someone go for their dreams? How do they come true. There is a lot of hard work (homework) and a lot of focus. Perhaps the hardest thing in the world is to listen to someone who is not on the bike with you. It's all about what you believe is the truth, then adding to that towards improvement. First, get you're bike dialed, then as WN puts it, increase or improved the % of what is the real precision. Getting the mind into the realtime is key! How you think and what you think makes a huge difference.

Too many times, we get folks that are "a day late and a dollar short" on their pedal stroke. They have heard, read or attempt to copy someone's style only to not find their style. That will change very soon. We have a high-tech device that will change the game. Stay tuned!!!

Many times over, we get gals and guys who want to climb to the top and they do. It's not for everyone, but if you are willing to break the game down to the single pedal stroke, the results will come. Amanda Carey just spent the last two years doing it. She has earned every single stroke.

Amanda Carey (Kenda/Felt) also gets honorable mention for her fifth place in a world poll of who is who. The American endurance racer dominated the National Ultra Endurance (NUE) Series on her way to taking the overall title for two years in a row.

Reality? How many times has a poor fitting bike or a sales job had you not living up to you're expectations?

Now is the time to get the head right. Get the bike correct, then focus on the correct moves. The challenge is to focus on reality or things that really make a difference in the expectations e.g. each stroke.

Any one who plays a sport at any level will tell you, the hardest thing in that game is repeat the best move. Without knowing it, many make the mistake that more is better. They take prior knowledge (memory) old bike fit and attempt to add to the output e.g. a golfer who hits the perfect ball, wants to hit it harder and the results suffer.

No human can hit the golf ball perfect over and over, place the hammer on the nail perfect every time. The same holds true for the pedal stroke. There is a lot of noise (outside sensations) e.g. beliefs that retards the process.

If you don't know your precise measurements (facts) e.g. cleat constraints and belief it, you provide a weaker pedal stroke.

Every golfer addresses the golf ball first or suffer the results. You need to know what you want to do, more important practice it.

The best sales job on how someone else does it is not good enough. If you can't reach the ball with the club in hand, the so called best move in the world will not make a difference. Your commands are for you're needs, not someone else and you have to learn them.

The brain is the key to all movement and if it has doubt, it is weaker.

When you have a closer (data) approximation to the solution of a problem, you have a better chance of repetition.

Even with the correct bike setup, you still have to have the sensory input, the belief (feedback) that allow optimal output.

Put it simply, our predictions come from truthful measurements, facts, that allow you to practice better. Expectations then come forth!

That's just the way it is!

A highly competitive women’s field lined up at the starting gates that included US National Champion and UCI world cyclo-cross leader Katie Compton (Rabobank-Giant Offroad). who returned to the USA after a recent win at the first World Cup in Plzen, Czech Republic.

Can you say the best in the world!

WN has worked with three of the top six about fit and pedal styles, some for years, some newer, Georgia, Sue, Amanda. Very soon we will have something that will even improve upon that!

Pan Am MTB - Plaxton and Bishop win silver and bronze

A former Pan Am Games champion Bishop said, "It was an aggressive race. I went full gas right from the start to put pressure on the others. Team USA and Cannondale Factory Racing support was excellent and allowed me to put together a hard fought bronze medal ride."

Bishop placed 4th in London's Olympic Mountain Bike test event earlier this summer and won gold at the Pan American Games in 2003.

"Since my gold medal ride in 2003, I have a new found respect for the magic of Juegos Pan Americanos, it's awesome to be back on the podium!" Bishop said.

Thousands of local residents gathered all along the course to cheer on the riders. The downtown core was buzzing with musical groups in true Mexican style, clowns, manufacturers displaying their products and local arts shops showcasing Mexican culture.

Spooky Cross UCI C2 - Butler 2nd!

Trebon and Mani Distance their Competition at Spooky Cross UCI C2

The 2011 Cross After Dark series has been dominated by riders either based in Europe or traveling this weekend to the first World Cup in the Czech Republic.

Mani grabbed the hole shot. The reigning French National Champion jumped out to a 7 second lead and never relinquished it to WN Sue Butler. That small gap stayed consistent until late in the race when it expanded to nearly 20 seconds over WN's Sue Butler (River City Bicycles/Ridley).

After the race Mani admitted her winning strategy consisted of telling Butler she was going to murder her “At the start I said, I’m going to kill you,” explained Mani with a sweet, slightly devilish grin. If you know Sue, there is always a inside joke going on. The inside joke, going back to last weekend’s New Belgium Cup in Fort Collins, CO.

Congrats to Sue Butler for the great results!

Behind Mani, the tough battle between Butler and Stetson-Lee kept things interesting. Stetson-Lee fought her way up to third and got within a handful of seconds but Sue Butler.
