Scary!

This is very scary!  This means humans have to learn!

Sudden pain that occurs in the calf muscle during activity may be the result of a pulled or torn calf muscle. This is called a calf strain or a calf pull. It occurs when part of the muscles of the lower leg (gastrocnemius or soleus) are stretched beyond their ability to withstand the tension. This stretching can result in small microtears to the muscle fibers or, in a severe injury, a complete rupture of the muscle fibers.

In Amanda Carey's words about her legs! Neuro-Muscular Adapation!

Do you have the discipline on what it takes?

There are 3 variables that effect the time for muscle growth. Diet, rest, and the stimulus!
Bottom line, it takes about 30 days, a little less time than the regeneration of red blood cells!  Just about the same time Amanda Carey has been racing cx (Neuro-muscular) adapation v.100 mile (Neuro-muscular) exercise. We know it takes another 30 days for the human to get use to the tool!

Initially your body will make strength gains due to neuro-muscular adaptation, not muscle growth.  That is why you have to get coached, get focused on what it is you need to do!  This can become mentally painful for the racer, meaning it can tax their way of thinking!  We all want to have success now, and we don't like to hear what we need to focus on!  So it takes a great mind to except one's results until the adaptation process kicks in!

Neuro-muscular adaptation means your body and "brain is learning" how to recruit more muscle fibres for a particular exercise i.e. cx,  and how to use those fibres to maximum effect. Only when the upper potential for neuro-muscular adaptation is reached will your body engage in the much more taxing process of growing existing muscle fibres (hypertrophy). This can take up to 3 months or even longer if training is not intense and frequent.

Another truth, for humans, it generally takes about 4–8 weeks to regenerate the red blood cells lost during a blood donation. Fact, with hard exercise, you loose RBC's.  An iron-fortified diet plus daily iron tablets can help rebuild the red blood supply, but again it takes about 1 month to get back to normal.  So its strange to see RBC's normal all the time?   The point, it takes time for humans to adapt!

Amanda Carey "I think I finally bled the summer of 100s outta my legs - 6th yesterday & 4th today at the Boulder Cup! Big thanks to Excel Sports for the last minute bike work and pit help and of course to Boise WV for the opportunity to race."

Cx is a very different event verses ultra mtb distance. The bike setup is very different, what you "focus" on is very different, the equipment is very different, etc... It takes time to adapt!

Think of football and note all the different body types and the different positions the players play.  For Amanda to perform at this level in this type of racing is a real study!  Just like NASCAR, setup on the big track is not the same as the short track!  Amanda is coming around nicely!

Well done Amanda Carey and thanks for using WN as your setup, your info needs, having the brain power to allow your Neuro-muscular system timet!  I very sure your Masters in Sport Psychology helps deal with this much over looked adaptation.

Brent Gorman (VW Boise) takes WN Sunday against 2011 USGP Overall Champ!

Local races are not small events here in Idaho.  You stand a good chance of racing the best in the world.  I kid you not!

Brent Gorman (VW Boise) was just in Wed to get his cx bike dialed and learn a few moves that make a difference. "I reckon so, Brent is now WN Faster" Brent takes 2nd Sat, then puts up a great battle against last years overall USGP cyclocross champ, a real tough guy Richard Feldman of Sun Valley, ID.

Feldman's Career Highlights:

Boise's Kevin Everett in 7th Heaven "US Open Tri"

This man has my respect!

Kevin Everett is a true tri pro, not an easy job, he has also stuck with WN for years.  Why?  "Getting off the bike in 3rd" at US Open!

Kevin knows it can take years to hone one's skills.  Kevin Everett, being a top ranked swimmer understands how important it is to work on his skills.  He is not like many looking for a sliver bullet! Perfection is a work in progress, it never stops. You stay the course, stick to it and it will come!  Kevin understands if winning was easy, losers would do it!

Kevin's in 7th Heaven after finishing 7th in the US Open Triathlon. Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series - Race to the Toyota Cup had all the elements of an international championship final. Getting off the bike in 3rd position behind super bikers Cam Dyeand Ben Collins was a thrill with Olympians Hunter Kemper and Bevan Docherty in hot pursuit. Finishing in the top 10 at a race of this caliber is all a full time Y coach, husband, and father of 2 can ask for.

There's no secret to the fountain of youth; movement is key. Thanks to the tremendous support of my family! I smiled many times on a tough course when thinking about their loving support.

When you go through a WN session, the WN's come!

Tall Oak Challenge 6 Hour race: another win for Kenda / Felt

It’s been a really busy last couple of weeks. I ended the NUE series with a top 5 in the Overall series at the beginning of September, then I hauled butt over to Interbike to see some really cool new sponsor products including Felt’s new FRD Nine Hardtail (best bike I have ridden period!), and then I ended things this past weekend with a solid win in the 6 hour race at Tall Oak Challenge in Jefferson, MO. No better way to end what is, for the most part, the end of September and the summer heat.
The Tall Oak Challenge race was a lot of fun. I didn’t know what to expect in Jefferson, MO, but was rather pleased with the fast, flowing, and fun trails. No better way for me to come off a week of Interbike then to kill myself in a 6 hour race on fun trails.
My legs felt good, my power was there, my equipment worked flawlessly, and my nutrition was spot on. That’s what it takes to have a solid 6 hour race. A lot has to go right and I had luck along with good planning on my side this past weekend. Very happy to have that.
Moving forward, I’ve got a lot of racing coming up. A lot of cyclocross, XC and marathon racing, and the Iceman Cometh early next month to finish things off.
My training is going to shift more towards short, hard, VO2max intervals (a.k.a. “throw up” intervals) to prep for the shorter more explosive events I’ve got coming up.  Pain is the name of the game for the next month of training and luckily the pain is in much shorter increments then the 100 milers I have been doing a lot of lately. Looking forward to that.
I’ll keep you posted on the latest and greatest.
Thanks for reading and have fun riding!

VW Boise CX Report

VW Boise Team likes the CX!

Amanda Carey is racing for the VW Boise based team.  She took her 100 mile legs back east to Gloucester, Mass, next Providence.  Amanda cracked top 15 two times!  CX is about the start, Amanda had to start back of the field both days!

At the local Boise cx races the VW Boise team rode away from the field.  WN fitted racers went Shawn Mitchell (VW Boise) 1, Brent Gorman (VW Boise) 2, Darren Lightfield (Wild Rockies) 3.

I was pleased to see a good turn out for the cx race at Eagle Island State Park.

As Darren Lightfield puts it "Legit" prove what we teach makes a difference!
